NEW DELHI: Five alleged bag-lifters were arrested by the Special Staff of the South Delhi police at Madangir on Saturday. The police impounded an auto-rickshaw and a Maruti van and recovered Rs. 96,000 in cash and stolen jewellery worth Rs. 4 lakhs from their possession. In the wake of a spurt in cases of bag-lifting across the district, the Special Staff team led by Inspector Rajender Singh was asked to zero in on the culprits. Investigations revealed that a gang of criminals had been committing thefts with the help of young children. Acting on a tip-off that some of the suspects were going to Kalkaji Market in an auto-rickshaw to commit crime, the police intercepted the vehicle at Madangir on Saturday and arrested five persons. They were identified as Raghu (20), Ranganathan (21), Devinder (21), Murli (20) and Narender Billa (48). At their instance, the police rounded up an eight-year-old boy who would break the windows of vehicles using a catapult to steal valuables like laptop and electronic items kept inside. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that their parents and grandparents had migrated from Sri Lanka to Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu way back in 1977. They soon moved to the Capital and settled in the Madangir area. Some of them entered into the world of crime and would commit thefts in market places with the help of children.
