Evasion of excise duty, service tax unearthed

BANGALORE:
The Bangalore zonal unit of the Central Excise Intelligence has unearthed Central Excise duty and Service Tax evasion to the extent of Rs. 100.22 crore for 2005-06, related to 78 cases.
The Additional Director General of Central Excise Intelligence, Somesh Arora, has in a press release said the enforcement cell, with jurisdiction over Kerala, Karnataka and Goa, had unearthed evasion of Central Excise duty to the extent of Rs. 51.84 crore in 15 cases and evasion of Service Tax worth Rs. 48.38 crore in 63 cases.
He said a sum of Rs. 32.15 crore had been realised out of the detections.
This, he said, was Rs 26.12 crore more compared to the corresponding period in the previous year and surpassed all records of the zonal unit in terms of evasion detection and recovery.
The directorate, he said, had targeted evasion-prone commodities besides evasion of Service Tax.
