This Day That Age
Inaugurating the All-India Farmers' Council in New Delhi on April 3, Prime Minister Nehru said that by forming agrarian co-operatives every farmer might benefit without pressure on any section of the community. "Agrarian co-operatives are full of potentialities if developed properly. They can usher in a new era. They would not only help farmers in marketing their produce but would satisfy many rural needs." This system of agrarian co-operatives, the Prime Minister said, had been adopted by China. About 50 to 60 farmers formed a co-operative in the beginning and now there were 25 to 30 lakh members in the movement. The Chinese claimed that since the adoption of this system there had been a tremendous increase in their national production. "In India we have to take full advantage of scientific developments in the agricultural field. But this is not possible when the land is divided into small fragments. Therefore, the need for agrarian co-operatives."
