Ship catches fire; Coast Guard rescues passengers

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Coast Guard has rescued a ship, carrying over 1,000 people that had caught fire in the Bay of Bengal. Another Hovercraft carrying repair staff has also sailed to assist the vessel MV Nicobar. No casualties were reported so far, said sources at the Coast Guard headquarters here. The first Hovercraft was rushed on Sunday after the MV Nicobar sent an SOS reporting a fire in its engine room. However, the crew and passengers brought the fire under control. Apart from the second Hovercraft that has set sail, a Coast Guard ship and an aircraft have been asked to provide assistance. The Coast Guard ships and aircraft are monitoring the ship's progress while the Hovercraft is in close attendance.
