Letters to the Editor
The DMK's election manifesto is most striking in that it does not address any urgent need of the people such as sustained supply of electricity, good drinking water, and infrastructure. Colour television sets will work only if there is power.
T.V. Suresh,
* * * It won't be a fair election unless the Election Commission intervenes to curb the trend of parties making desperate promises. Its nonchalance will encourage parties to promise free cars, houses, and many other things. And parties that fight shy of making lavish promises will not make an impression on the common man.
V. Kameswaran,
* * * The E.C. can do nothing to prevent parties making tall promises, most of which cannot be fulfilled. The reluctance to vote of the rich and the middle class who only criticise the system but do nothing about it also compounds the problem.
D.B.N. Murthy,
* * * Many have found fault with the DMK for its promise of colour television sets and rice for Rs.2 a kg. They do not seem to take note of the promise of providing employment for 3 lakh youth and lessening the fees in professional colleges. By the way, how many who are crying foul in this column are going to vote? I request them not to make a mountain out of a molehill.
M. Chellapandiyan,
* * *
Y.S. Kadakshamani,
