Poll panel appoints 14 observers for Pondicherry

The team includes five Expenditure Observers

Pondicherry: The Election Commission has appointed 14 observers (including five Expenditure Observers) for the coming Assembly polls in the Union Territory.

District Collector-cum-District Election Officer G. Theva Needhi Dhas said in a release that specific constituencies had been allotted to these observers and they would have the first visit to their respective constituencies on the last day of nomination. While April 12 is the last date for filing nominations for Mahe (two constituencies) and Yanam (lone segment), which would have first phase of poll on May 3, the last date for submitting nominations for Pondicherry (21 constituencies) and Karaikal (six) is April 20. Pondicherry and Karikal would have the poll in the second phase on May 8.

These observers would supervise process of nominations, scrutiny, withdrawal, campaign and also the poll. They would also supervise preparation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), training of polling personnel and conduct of voter awareness programmes.

All observers would monitor counting and declaration of results in their second visit.

The Expenditure Observers would monitor the expenditure of the candidates by checking accounts submitted by the candidates. Mr. Dhas said that a list of sensitive and hypersensitive polling stations had been prepared in consultation with Returning officers, senior police officers and political parties.

Mr. Dhas said 69 sector officers had been appointed to coordinate and supervise poll related arrangements in all the constituencies of Pondicherry district.

Order to liquor shops

He said all arrack, toddy and liquor shops, clubs, bars and restaurants serving liquor in Pondicherry and Karaikal districts have been ordered to remain closed for three days from May 6 to 8. These shops would also be closed in Mahe and Yanam from May 1 to 3.
