B. Muralidhar Reddy
THE PAKISTAN Government on Monday announced that President Pervez Musharraf has granted special remission in the sentences of various categories of prisoners. The decision, however, does not pertain to Sarabjit Singh, convicted on charges of murder, espionage, and anti-state activities. Sarabjit Singh had earlier moved a petition seeking a pardon. An official statement said the remissions were granted on the occasion of Pakistan Day, observed on March 23. The decision sets at rest the controversy on whether or not Gen. Musharraf in his capacity as President has the right to grant remission to any prisoner. It is not clear when the mercy petition moved by Sarabjit Singh will come up for consideration by Gen. Musharraf.
