Exploring woman's identity on the canvas

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: A one-week-long solo exhibition of paintings by Amita Abbi Prashant is now on at India Habitat Centre here.

"The Magnificent One'' featuring 27 figurative paintings opened this past weekend.

The artist, who has been working for the exhibition for the past 18 months, paints with acrylic colours on canvas at her home in Hyderabad and wherever she travels.

This is her third solo show, her earlier ones having been held in Chennai and Hyderabad.

"The exhibition is basically an exploration of oneself as a woman. It is about a woman's identity, her relationship with soul mate and reflection in other women. An attempt has been made to reach out to the other woman," says Amita.

Hailing from Delhi, Amita has been living in Hyderabad for the past four years.

An alumnus of Delhi University's Sri Venkateswara College, Amita is a multi-talented person. In Delhi she received training in garment technology and textiles and did a certificate course in photography from Triveni Kala Sangam.

Later she did her schooling in Fine Arts from Chennai in 1998 and also experimented with graphics at various art colleges and art studios in Hyderabad.

She has also conducted block-printing workshops for the Department of Tourism of the Andhra Pradesh Government.
