BANGALORE: Members of the judiciary normally keep away from public, and particularly from the media. The higher a judicial official rises in the field, the more he keeps away from the public glare. When a person reaches the post of a judge in the High Court or the Supreme Court, he or she keeps away from the limelight. It is rare to get the opportunity to interact with judges of higher courts and rarer still for the judges to meet the members of the Fourth Estate. However, on Saturday last, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph broke all barriers in his hour-long interaction with the media. Not only did the Chief Justice brief the members of the press on the elaborate and exciting events on the occasion of the golden jubilee celebrations of the High Court, but also spoke on the roles of the judiciary and the media. He showered encomiums on the judiciary and the Fourth Estate and said they were the guardians of democracy. "While the judiciary upholds the Constitution, the Fourth Estate is responsible for moulding public opinion against any attempt by anybody to destroy democracy. Both the judiciary and the fourth estate played similar roles. Therefore, each complemented the other," he said.
