Workshop on molecular biology

Staff Reporter

Hands-on training on advanced techniques organised

CHENNAI: The Department of Molecular Biology at the Cancer Institute is organising a hands-on training workshop on advanced molecular biological techniques from Wednesday.

The 10-day workshop will focus on the new techniques of microarray and real-time PCR or polymerase chain reaction test.

The microarray system is an important equipment for accelerating gene expression studies that is shaping new understanding of cancer. The equipment allows scientists to analyse more than 40,000 genes in a tumour sample and identify genes which are likely to be critical in the genesis of the malignant process and in progression of the disease. The real-time PCR offers a sensitive method in the detection of genes and has potential to revolutionise the field of pharmacogenesis.

According to T. Rajkumar, scientific director of the Institute, the course content at the workshop has been designed to help participants acquire skills in the latest molecular biology techniques. V. Rao Aiyagari, adviser and member secretary, Department of Science and Technology, will inaugurate the programme.
