Dog which bit people in slum found to be rabid

BANGALORE: The dog which bit 16 persons at Lakshmanapuri slum near Ananda Rao Circle on March 31, has been found to be rabid. This has been confirmed by the post-mortem report of the dog given by the pathology department of Veterinary College, Hebbal, to the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, on Monday.

Deputy Director of Animal Health, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, Prakash Reddy said the BMP health department team immediately took steps for the safety of the victims of dog bite. A team of doctors and nursing staff from Seshadripuram went to the slum to give second dose of anti-rabies vaccine to the 16 victims. The victims will be given four more doses of the vaccine over a period of 90 days.

Dr. Reddy told The Hindu that any person, who has been bitten by a dog, is normally given three doses of anti-rabies vaccine if the dog is not rabid. If the dog is found to be rabid, then the victims are administered with three more doses of vaccine.
