MADURAI: Banking activities in all branches, regional office and zonal office in Madurai module covering the southern districts came to a standstill on Monday as the State Bank of India Officers' Association and State Banks' Staff Union began an indefinite strike in support of a charter of their demands. Over 4,500 officers and staff members working in 146 branches, regional offices in Madurai and Tirunelveli and the Lead Bank Branch in Tuticorin struck work, according to T.V. Chandrasekaran, deputy general secretary, State Bank Staff Union, Madurai module.
ATM transaction
Though Government employees and pensioners would not face much of a problem as bank officials and staff cleared their salaries by working on Saturday and Sunday, other customers could not do any transaction on Monday. "The automated teller machines that worked today would get depleted tomorrow," Mr. Chandrasekaran said. Earlier, officers, staff and pensioners staged a demonstration in front of the bank's main branch on West Veli Street. The regional secretary, SBI Officers' Association, K. Muniasamy, participated in the demonstration. Revision of pension was pending before the management for the last 14 years, he added.
