NEW DELHI: Counterfeit Nokia mobile phone accessories worth Rs. 70 lakhs imported from China were seized by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch from a shop and a godown at Ghaffar Market in Karol Bagh this past weekend. A 46-year-old man and his son have been arrested.
Acting on a tip-off that fake Nokia accessories were being sold at Gandhi Enterprises in Ghaffar Market, an EOW mounted a raid and arrested Hemant Gandhi and his 21-year-old son, Rohit. During interrogation, Hemant allegedly disclosed that they were into the sale
During the raid, the police seized over 6,500 mobile phone covers, 3,650 chargers, 820 hands-free headsets, 300 batteries, 200 leather cases, 6,500 neck-strips and 1,700 pieces of packaging material valued at over Rs. 70 lakhs. Subsequently, the accused were booked under relevant sections of the Copy Rights Act and the Trade Merchandise Mark Act.
Investigations revealed that the accused would visit China at least once a month and purchase the items in bulk through their "front" company named Universal Trading. They allegedly revealed that they had bought the latest consignment from Xing Lui Electronic Company of Shenzen in China, which was subsequently brought to India by air.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Prabhakar, the accused then packed the products in their designated packages at the Ghaffar Market godown and sold them either in bulk or in retail.
