NEW DELHI: At least six persons including a child and a woman have been killed in a major fire that broke out in the densely-populated Yamuna Pushta slum cluster at Shakarpur in East Delhi on Monday, destroying scores of jhuggis.

According to the police, the fire broke out around 9-45 p.m. and was soon declared serious as it had engulfed a large number of jhuggis within a short span, forcing the dwellers to rush out of the homes with whatever belongings they could carry to safety.

Even as thick black smoke billowed out of the slum cluster, scores of hapless women and children gathered on the ITO flyover to watch the firemen battle the flames.

A commuter on his way home said: "The jhuggi dwellers came up on the flyover along with their belongings, which led to a massive traffic jam. While I was stranded in the snarl, at one time it seemed that the fire would engulf the entire flyover."

Nearly 40 fire tenders reached the spot and prevented the blaze from spreading further. "Our first priority is to put out the fire, which might take over five hours completely," said a fire official, adding that narrow lanes of the jhuggi cluster made their task difficult.

Later, the Delhi Finance Minister A.K. Walia visited the site to supervise the fire fighting operations.

The fire was brought under control around midnight.

In another incident, about five godowns stocking tents and a couple of jhuggis at Bhalswa near Jehangirpuri in North-West Delhi were gutted in a fire that broke out around 6-30 p.m. As many as 21 fire tenders were pressed into action and the blaze was brought under control within two hours. No one was reported injured in the incident. The local police have initiated a probe into the matter.
