Call for studies on growth of livestock population

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: A three-day refresher course on Integrated Sample Survey (ISS) methodologies in the estimation of livestock products, including milk, meat and egg, in Kerala is being organised by the Directorate of Animal Husbandry here.

The programme was inaugurated on Monday by Lizzie Jacob, Principal Secretary, Planning and Economic Affairs. Arun Saxena, Advisor, Statistics, Government of India, delivering the keynote address, said that animal husbandry statistics is the platform for every activity in the sector.

The Government has been implementing various development programmes in the livestock sector through the Animal Husbandry Department.

In order to assess the impact of the programmes, it is essential to take up studies on the growth of livestock population, increase in the per capita output due to better management practices.

The quintessential livestock census gives the number of livestock only once in five years.

But the livestock and poultry population could be subject to a lot of changes on an annual basis or even seasonally and these can be monitored only through sample surveys. Production estimates are required for assessing the progress achieved and for planning new programmes in the sector.
