COIMBATORE: A 24-year-old woman got back her nearly severed hand after a surgery at Rex Ortho Hospital. Kalaivani was working on a plastic crusher machine in an industrial unit at Sundakkamuthur here when the fingers in the right hand got stuck in it. The whole arm was dragged into it though Kalaivani tried to pull it out. The hand was severely damaged below the elbow. The bone was broken and the muscles, nerves and blood vessels were severed. The hand was nearly severed and was hanging on to the skin and some soft tissues. Timely arrival at the hospital and the surgery saved Kalaivani from amputation and restored her hand that earned an income for the family, a press release from the hospital said. These types of cases should be brought to hospitals within four hours from the time of injury, it said.
