COIMBATORE : Nearly 7,000 women Self-help group (SHG) members took out a rally in the city recently to stress the importance of educating the female child, protecting environment and empowering women. Starting from the Coimbatore Institute of Technology, the rally proceeded to A.P. Kalyana Mandapam, near Kovai Medical Center and Hospitals. The need of the hour was to ensure that every girl child was educated, women who took part in the rally said. These women are part of the 600-odd SHGs promoted by Coodu, a non-governmental organisation (NGO). The NGO provides training to SHG women on capacity building, account management and entrepreneurial development, said G. Muruganandam, Project Coordinator. Two such SHGs have set up canteens at the Women's Polytechnic College and Government College and they have been doing very well, earning approximately Rs. 80 a person a day. Nearly 40 SHGs had decided to run a department store near Kalapatti, he said.
