COIMBATORE: Use of Information Technology will give the textile industry tangible gains and will go a long way in improving the working of the industry, said Shekhar Agarwal, Group Vice-Chairman of LNJ Bhilwara Group. He delivered the keynote address at CompTex 2006, a two-day textile conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in association with the Southern India Mills' Association, here on Tuesday. Speaking on "Advantage IT - A Competitive Tool for the Indian Textile Industry", he said that strong IT support systems, entrepreneurial vision and managerial competence were some of the factors that would help the Indian textile industry become globally competitive. Management practices and technology were "business enablers" that would help meet the global challenges of market forces. "Business strategy has to be strongly supported by IT," which would organise information from manufacturing, sales and finance and human resource and enable data sharing for better decision making. Information Technology helped an enterprise get connected to its suppliers and customers and control operational and production costs. Mr. Agarwal explained that the textile industry would benefit from Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) as it minimised data entry points, cut operation costs, increased productivity, reduced lead time, purchasing costs, inventory and wastage and improved relationship with clients. He explained how implementation of the tool had helped his company save costs and have better production planning.
