Farmer discovers old cave at Anadur Wadi

Staff Correspondent

BIDAR: A farmer accidentally discovered an old cave at Anadur Wadi, a hamlet in Bidar taluk a few days ago.

Siddramappa Purantar, a farmer from Aland and a devotee of the Mallinath Ashram of Anadur Wadi, found the cave's opening covered with stones and mud. "I tried to dig a pit to plant a tree by the side of the road and I found the soil was softer than usual. I sought the help of some villagers to dig around the area and came upon a rock. We moved the rock and found a hole big enough for a person to crawl through. Inside we found a 50-ft wide cave in which we could walk around," Mr. Purantar said.

Villagers continued to excavate the site and found multiple chambers and pathways in the cave.

"It seems to be longer than we thought. We have not yet come to the end of the cave," Gangadhar, a villager, said.

Assistant Conservator of Archaeology Anand Bamle said he had intimated the director of archaeology about the discovery. A team of senior officials are expected to visit the site soon, he said.

Historian B.R. Konda said the cave probably belongs to the 11th century. He said a stone inscription found in the Narneshwar temple in Anandur 30 years ago mentioned a large tank and a cave near the village.
