Experiment to hone English skill

About 50 final year students of Department of English Literature of Fatima College recently undertook a unique experiment to hone the English skills of 50 ninth standard students of Sree Visalakshmi Mills High School.

Students, who dressed up like youths from Mumbai, Madurai and England, introduced words and expressions in simple English through real-life situations and motivated the school children to have interaction with `the student-actors.'

While students from Mumbai and England conversed in English those representing Madurai translated it into Tamil. The bilingual presentation enabled the children to actively involve in listening and learning the language.

The student-teachers adopted one-to-one teaching methodology using creative tools to develop a rapport with the school students hailing from poor economic and educational background. They also improved reading and listening skills of learners through consistent training that was conducted once in a week as part of extension activities of the department. Though the volunteers do not claim that they have brought about dramatic changes through their performances, they have, in fact, freed the children of hatred for and fear of the English language.
