Bangalore: Youth are the treasure of the country, Alkod Hanumanthappa, Minister for Youth Services and Sports has said. He was speaking at the valedictory of the training programme for cultural ambassadors here on Tuesday. It was organised by the State unit of National Service Scheme (NSS) and Department of Kannada and Culture. Over 140 students from University of Agriculture Sciences, Dharwad and Bangalore, and Karnataka Veterinary Sciences and Fisheries University, Bidar, participated in the five-day programme. "Tradition and culture does not have one definition. We are forgetting our folklore, which is a treasure trove of knowledge," he said.
Reading habit
The youth should be taught to respect our land, culture and tradition, Mr. Hanumanthappa said. He urged the students to cultivate reading habit. In his welcome address, A.M.R. Kotraiah, coordinating officer of NSS State unit, said the programme was well-received by the students. "Our State has its own culture and tradition that are unique. According to the Halmidi inscription, Kannada is almost 2,000 years' old. Vachana Sahitya and Dasa Sahitya have had tremendous influence on the ancient language," he said. Mr. Kotraiah said Kannada is the only language in the country to have won seven Jnanpith awards.
