VELLORE: About 600 Communist Party of India (Marxists) workers led by `Judo' K.K. Rathinam, N. Paramasivam, Gudiyatham panchayat union CPI(M) secretary and C. Subramani, member of the party's Vellore district unit observed a one-day fast opposite the new bus stand in Gudiyatham on Tuesday, demanding a change in the candidate for the Gudiyatham Assembly constituency. (The CPI(M) has nominated G. Latha, secretary of the Kaniyambadi panchayat union unit of the party as the candidate for Gudiyatham). Hundreds of party workers met at Gudiyatham on Friday and threatened to resign if the party did not change the candidate. The fasting CPI (M) workers demanded that the party nominate R. Paramasivam, a party veteran who has been in the party for nearly 50 years and an activist of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, to contest from the Gudiyatham constituency, instead of Mrs.Latha, described as an ``outsider". (Mrs.Latha hails from Melalathur village located in the Gudiyatham constituency). When asked about the fast, T.R. Purushothaman, Vellore district secretary of CPI(M), said the district body fully supported the candidature of Mrs. Latha. The district body would seek the permission of the state party unit to expel Mr.N. Paramasivam, Mr.R. Paramasivam and Mr. C. Subramani from the primary membership of the party for their "anti-party activities". It would also seek an explanation from Mr. `Judo' Rathinam for his act of presiding over the fast in Gudiyatham.
