Sreesanth — star of the year

KOCHI: Apart from Mohammad Kaif and Venugopala Rao, the Indian cricketers stayed off the Nehru Stadium on their arrival in the city on Tuesday. But they all joined in and cheered Kerala cricketer S. Sreesanth who was awarded the `Star of the year' by the Mathrubhumi sports magazine.

Sreesanth received a cheque for Rs. 1 lakh and a scroll from the Indian coach Greg Chappell at the brief and nicely-arranged function at the Taj Malabar this evening.

Captain Rahul Dravid, the Kerala Cricket Association President S.K. Nair, DIG K. Padmakumar, Mathrubhumi Managing Editor P.V. Chandran and former India player Sunil Valsan were among who spoke in praise of the young fast bowler. Sreesanth's parents and other family members were in full attendance and it made their day.

"I'm at a loss for words... I don't know what to say... I'm so honoured," said Sreesanth.

It did not matter. The guests were all impressed. — Principal Correspondent
