VHP meeting

TIRUCHI: The Viswa Hindu Parishad has urged the government to re-introduce the Prohibition of Forcible Conversion of Religion Act.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting of the district unit of the Parishad held here on Sunday. Another resolution condemned all the political parties in the state for not including the resolutions adopted at the recent Hindus protection conference held at Erode in their election manifestos.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.93 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 1,151 cusecs and the outflow, 2,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Farmer dies in accident

Nagercoil: A farmer was killed in road accident on Tuesday. According to police, Krishnan (55) of Pampanvilai near Rajakkamangalam was going towards Koravilai when a tractor from the opposite direction hit him killing him on the spot.

11 injured in group clash

Tuticorin : Eleven persons were injured when two groups of fishermen clashed at Manapad near here on Tuesday. The police said the groups attacked each other with sickles and deadly weapons over some trivial dispute. Ravindran (52) and 10 others were admitted to various hospitals.

The Thattarmadom police have registered a case and are investigating.

Car hits bike: one hurt

Tuticorin: K. Martin (45) was injured when a car hit his bike here on Monday.

The police said the accident happened while he was riding along Pudukottai-Tirunelveli highway. The injured was admitted to the Government Hospital for medical care.

The Pudukottai police have arrested car driver Mandthiramoorthy (26) for rash and negligent driving.

Lorries seized

Nagercoil: The police on Tuesday seized two lorries laden with sand when the drivers tried to smuggle river sand to Kerala.

DMK activists hail decision

ERODE: The Bhavanisagar DMK unit has welcomed the decision of the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, for changing the Bhavanisagar DMK candidate.

According to the first list announced by the party high command Geetha Natarajan was to contest from the Bhavanisagar Assembly constituency. On Tuesday the party changed the candidate and declared O. Subramaniam its official candidate.

Mr. Subramaniam was a former conductor in the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation. He contested 2001 Assembly election and was defeated by the AIADMK.

Killed in accident

SALEM: A 35-year-old man, who sustained severe injuries in a road accident and was admitted to the Salem Government Medical College Hospital, died here on Tuesday.

The police said that Venkatachalam of Peddar Madai sustained injuries when a motorcycle hit his two-wheeler near Kondalampatti on Monday.

Sentenced for life

SALEM: Principal District Judge A.J. Muruganandam sentenced a person to life imprisonment in a murder case here on Tuesday.

The prosecution said that Sithuraj (35) of Malaiyampalayam near Jalakandapuram killed his brother Sakthivel (37) by hitting the latter on his head with a boulder, following a family dispute, in March 2004.

Found dead

SALEM: A rag picker was found dead under mysterious circumstances on a roadside platform near the Salem New Integrated Bus Stand here on Tuesday. The police said the identity of the rag picker was yet to be discovered.

Special buses

SALEM: The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) Limited, Salem, will operate special buses to Palani and Vada Chennimalai near Attur in view of the Panguni Uthram festival.

Special buses to Palani will be operated from Salem and Namakkal via Erode and Kodumudi from April 11 to 13. Special buses to Vada Chennimalai will be operated from Salem, Attur and Kallakurichi from April 11 to 14. Similarly, special buses will be operated to Kumaragiri from Salem on April 12, a release from the TNSTC said.

Seminar

SALEM: The Department of Chemistry, Muthayammal College of Arts and Science, organised a seminar on research-oriented UV-Visible Spectral Analysis and its applications. Professor in Organic Chemistry, Annamalai University, S. Kabilan, was the resource person. About 300 students of chemistry and biochemistry attended the seminar.

Division Bench stays single judge order

CHENNAI: A single judge order of the Madras High Court setting aside the removal of a woman as chairperson of the Srivilliputtur panchayat union was stayed by a Division Bench of the court on Tuesday.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice Prabha Sridevan granted the interim stay on an appeal preferred by the Government.

In his order, Justice Elipe Dharma Rao, besides setting aside the removal of Seeniammal from the chairperson post, "strongly deprecated" the local MLA and Minister, R.T. Inbatamizhan, for his role in the matter. — Special Correspondent

Candidate changed

CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi has announced that Jeeva O. Subramaniyam will replace Geeta Natarajan as the party's candidate in Bhavanisagar.

In a press release issued here on Tuesday, he said the change was necessitated because the selected candidate wanted to withdraw citing family circumstances. — Special Correspondent

Janata Party candidates for Madurai

MADURAI: The Janata Party has announced its candidates for Melur and Madurai Central constituencies in Madurai district. The party is contesting Omalur, Melur, Madurai Central, Perambur and Mylapore in alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party.

V.S. Chandralekha, State president, said in a press release that S. Purushothaman would be the candidate for Melur and A. Sasikumar would contest from Madurai Central.

In another statement, the party president, Subramanian Swamy, said the Janata-BJP alliance had been formed to enable Hindus stand up and fight the insults "heaped on them by Dravidian movement," oppose terrorism and liberate farmers from poverty, indebtedness and misery. He accused the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam fronts of having failed to develop the State in the last 40 years. — Special Correspondent

Archaka sangam's appeal to poll panel

CHENNAI: The Tamizh Nadu Vaikanasa Archaka Sangam has urged the State Government and the Election Commission to ensure that poll propaganda materials of political parties did not carry any references offensive to Archakas and theists.

A resolution to this effect was adopted by the Sangam at its meeting at Thirukoilur, Villupuram last week.

The Government should implement welfare schemes for Archakas. The services of Archakas should be regularised. In many instances, their services were terminated by temple officials abruptly. — Special Correspondent

Hotel management examination

CHENNAI: Application form and information brochure of the joint entrance examination to be conducted by the National Council for Hotel Management are now available.

The council conducts the examination for several affiliated organisations such as the Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Chennai, for admission to Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) programme in hospitality and hotel administration for 2006-07.

The last date for submission of application forms is April 7, according to a press release issued by the Institute.
