ANANTAPUR: Close on the heels of the police confiscating Rs. 50 lakhs before the cash was handed over to Maoists in Mahabunagar district by two persons at the behest of contractors of an irrigation project, the Anantapur district police on Tuesday seized Rs. 3 lakhs in a similar way.

Giving details to mediapersons, Officer on Special Duty G. Vijaykumar said that the cash was recovered from a Maoist, Venkatrami Reddy (34), of Pandikunta village in Vajrakarur mandal.

    Feigns ignorance

The militant was nabbed by the police during nakabandhi on Monday night, when he was on way to hand over the cash collected from a representative of a Handri-Neeva contractor to Penna Area committee secretary Kranti alias Gangaram.

Asked from which contractor the money was extorted, the militant said he had no idea, as his role was to collect the cash from a person at a given place and hand it over to the dalam.

An active militant of Penna Ahobilam dalam, he also allegedly participated in the blast of Vajrakarur police station building and others.

The OSD noted that Venkatrami Reddy was acting as a key insider in the dalam and had already extorted about Rs. 50 lakhs from contractors executing works in Uravakonda, Guntakal, Vajrakarur, Pamidi and Garladinne mandals and handed it over to the dalam.

The police also arrested two other active militants working for the Penna Ahobilam dalam. They were Mallaiah (31) of Katrimala and Nagendra (24) of Appajipeta, both in Pamidi mandal.
