Fairy tale promises

Come election and political parties start vying with one another to appease different sections. This nourishes fissiparous tendencies. Assuming that the DMK's fairly tale promises will be implemented, one has to visualise the havoc the idiot box will wreak on people by encroaching into the productive hours. Television addiction is already proving a laggard.

There is nothing wrong in parties announcing sops in their manifestos. But they should be realistic and should benefit the people in the long run. Big businessmen and political leaders enjoy people's money in a number of unimaginable ways. Why calculate the cost to the exchequer when it comes to distributing goods or subsiding food for the poor?

The cartoon (April 4) is testimony to pictures speaking louder than words. Hats off to The Hindu for publishing a cartoon that beautifully sums up the discussions on the manifesto issue.

The article "Laughter really is the best medicine" (Op-ed, April 4) explaining the curative value of laughter is very helpful and instructive. In this context, we should thank the DMK for its manifesto. Campaigning by parties will provide us with enough laughter till the elections are over. After the elections, more jokes will follow.

Ballwin, Missouri
