ALAPPUZHA: KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala has said that the agitations held by the Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan in the last five years in issues, including that of settlers taking over land in Mathikettan, sale of Kovalam palace and question on whether to allow Coca Cola factory at Plachimada to draw ground water, was aimed at gaining an upperhand in the CPI(M) group politics. At a meet-the-press programme at Alappuzha Press Club on Tuesday, Mr. Chennithala said the agitations of Mr. Achuthanandan were a one man show that did not receive much support from his party. Mr. Chennithala said the CPI(M)-controlled Mathikettan panchayat had supported the settlers. In the Plachimada issue, it was the LDF Government lead by E.K. Nayanar that had given permission to the Coca Cola firm to operate in the panchayat, said Mr. Chennithala. Mr. Chennithala said Mr. Achuthanandan's present public image of a fighter for public cause was a carefully planned and created one. Mr. Chennithala added that Mr. Achuthanandan had a negative approach that of an anti-development person. He said the official opinion of the CPI(M) in the issues taken up by Mr. Achuthanandan was not the same as that of Mr. Achuthanandan. He said if Mr. Achuthanandan was sincere in his agitations, he should have fought against Mathikettan panchayat and the Nayanar Government. Mr. Chennithala said the CPI(M) was blowing out of proportion the issue of SFI leader and LDF candidate Sindhu Joy. Mr. Chennithala said the CPI(M) was mistaken if it thought that Ms. Joy would garner the sympathy of the public. Mr. Chennithala said the KPCC had given charge of DCC president to senior Congress leaders in those districts where existing DCC presidents compete in the elections. The leaders who are given charge are V.S. Sivakumar in Thiruvanamthapuram, T.G. Padmanabhan Nair in Alappuzha, P. Mohanraj in Pathanamthitta, Manimangalath Kuttyali in Kozhikode and K. Veluthambu in Kasaragod.
