`Public participation must for a clean Delhi'

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday said any effort to make the Capital a clean city would need participation of common citizens, especially children.

Inaugurating "Eco-Meet 2006" at National Bal Bhawan organised by the Environment Department, the Chief Minister said efforts in this direction entailed garbage management, control of pollution and general sanitation. The involvement of people in solving issues like pollution caused by vehicular emission, plastic bags and effluent discharge into rivers was essential, she added.

26 lakh kids given polio drops

NEW DELHI: Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri chaired a State Coordination Committee meeting on "Intensified Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme 2005-06" at Delhi Secretariat on Tuesday.

The Minister said in February 2006 during the Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme, the Delhi Government had successfully immunised over 26 lakh children. He expressed hope that the Capital would soon become polio-free as only one polio case was reported in 2005 and no case had been reported so far this year.

Chinese team meets Delhi Speaker

NEW DELHI: A six-member delegation of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Shanghai, led by its vice-chairman Song Yiqiao called on Delhi Assembly Speaker Chaudhary Prem Singh at Old Secretariat here on Monday. They discussed the functioning of the Assembly.

The focus of the Chinese visit is on interacting with legislative bodies in India and study the construction sector as the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference overseas the implementation of national laws, regulations and policies.

NCC team returns

NEW DELHI: A National Cadet Corps delegation comprising one officer and 12 cadets has returned here after a 12-day visit to Bangladesh.

During its stay in Bangladesh, the NCC team got an opportunity to watch the Independence Day celebrations of that country and also visited various places of historical and military importance.

Woman, son held in dowry case

NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old man and his 52-year-old mother have been arrested by the North-East Delhi police for allegedly torturing his wife for more dowry and trying to kill her. According to the police, 25-year-old Rehana, a resident of Gautam Nagar in Usmanpur, was admitted to GTB Hospital with burn injuries this past Sunday. On Monday, she gave a statement to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate alleging that her husband and her mother-in-law used to torture her for dowry and that they had set her afire. Following the statement, the Usmanpur police registered a case and arrested the two accused.
