CHENNAI: As part of the activities of the Kannoli-Vision Saver Project for the rural poor, a bus was donated to the Rotary Club of Madras Fort and Sankara Eye Hospital to transport patients from villages to the base hospital and back. The rural outreach programme aimed at people in villages located around Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chittor (Andhra Pradesh) provides treatment for eye ailments. At the base hospital in Pammal, free surgery with intraocular lens is also conducted. So far, 69,053 free surgeries were conducted, said president P. Ravindranath, on Monday. The 42-seater bus, which cost Rs.11 lakh, was donated by the United India Insurance Company and Sriram Chits (Tamil Nadu). Chopra from United India Insurance Company dedicated the bus on Monday at a function attended by Rotary International former district governor M. Balaji, founder-chairman of Kannoli project B.P. Jain and Managing Trustee of Sankara Eye Hospital P. Janakiraman.
