CHENNAI: The Department of Economics of D.G. Vaishnav College, Chennai, with the help of its postgraduate and M.Phil. students, conducted a socio-economic survey at Kannanthangal in Kancheepuram district. The annual exercise undertaken in villages helps the students to get trained in collection of data, and its organisation and processing, leading to useful inferences about socio-economic fabric of the people there. It also makes them understand rural life. Kannanthangal, with 120 households, is situated about 14 km from Sunguvar Chattiram off the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway.
Health awareness
The survey sought to gauge the awareness of villagers on health issues such as AIDS and the need for infrastructure and basic amenities. The survey indicated good local awareness of the benefits of small family norms and 98 per cent of children were attending school. The average monthly income per household was around Rs. 5,400. . The most significant requirements of the villagers were a medical centre, more buses up to Sunguvar Chattiram and better irrigation facilities. For the students it was a rewarding experience, said S. Narasimhan, Head of the Economics department.
