HYDERABAD: Burglars are having a free run in Hyderabad, especially those targeting jewellery shops. In yet another incident of a jewellery shop being looted, reported from Chintal Basthi area on Tuesday, the intruders walked away with gold ornaments worth Rs. 4 lakhs. It was only on Sunday night, thieves had broken into Tara Jewellers at Abids by cutting open the rear shutter to decamp with gold ornaments worth Rs. 60 lakhs.

In Chintal Basthi, thieves entered Arihant jewellery-cum-pawn brokers shop by breaking open the main door grills and shutter and stole gold ornaments weighing 46 tolas. The intruders had broken open the cash chest. Gold ornaments which were displayed on the racks and those kept in the cupboard were untouched, Saifabad Detective Inspector N Sudheer said.

    Broken grills

The theft came to light when local vegetable vendors noticed the broken grills and shutter and alerted shop owner Kailash Gandhi. The police who rushed to the spot cordoned off the area and brought the clues team to collect fingerprints. A police officer said the thieves left only some artificial gold jewellery in the shop. "How could the thieves know the difference between original and artificial ornaments? We collected some fingerprints from the scene and will be able to zero in on the gang shortly,'' the official added.

In a separate incident, burglars broke into a railway employee's house at Mettuguda on Tuesday morning and escaped with gold ornaments and cash all worth over Rs 1 lakh. Police said thieves entered the house of Subash Chander by breaking open the main door locks and fled with 10 tolas gold ornaments and Rs 20,000.
