HYDERABAD: Gold ornaments were stolen from a flat belonging to the TRS legislator Dugyala Srinivas Rao at the high-security Old MLA Quarters in Himayathnagar on Monday.

Thieves entered the flat of the MLA from Warangal district by using a duplicate key and stole 10 tolas of gold jewellery from the almirah. The incident came to light when Mr Srinivas Rao and his associates came to the flat no. 403 located on the fourth floor of M. S. block-II only to find that all the articles were ransacked.

However, the thieves left a handbag containing Rs 10 lakhs in the house without noticing the cash in it. Initially, the thieves made a vain bid to open the bag, but later fled only with the ornaments. The legislator left the flat on March 31 and came to the city on Monday, Narayanaguda inspector T Chandrasekhar Reddy said.

    Needle of suspicion

"We suspect the role of domestic helps and drivers as thieves will not try to enter the high-security zone and commit the offence," the Inspector said. There were 56 quarters in two blocks. At least 100 domestic helps and drivers followed by hundreds of party activists visit the two blocks everyday. A police official said that efforts were on to collect the details of all the persons working in the MLA Quarters. "We are also trying to collect details of the bachelors who earlier resided in a flat in front of the legislator's house till last week," the official said adding that more than two persons might have been involved in the offence.
