Churches' plea to Government on landless labour issue

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Council of Churches, a representative body of all Protestant denominations in the State, has urged the Government to take up schemes on a big scale for landless labour "as a matter of justice" in proportion to `Jalayagnam' launched for farmers.

At a meeting at Jadcherla recently, representatives of these churches, however, lauded the openness with which the Government held talks with naxalites aiming at overall development of the State.

J. Oliver, council treasurer, said here on Wednesday that the meeting had noted with concern the orders issued by the Government from time to time in the name of streamlining the Christian institutions which, in effect, were "throttling genuine ones" affecting the education delivery system. The meeting resolved to fight any abuse of the minority rights. The churches, however, offered to work hand-in-hand with the Government to achieve Harithandhra Pradesh.
