Bangalore: Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has offered to test samples of borewell water brought by citizens at its laboratory on the premises of High Grounds water reservoir. BWSSB said it has taken note of media reports about ground water in some parts of the city not being fit for drinking purposes because of high nitrate content. Above safe limits, the nitrate gets converted into nitrites in the stomach with harmful effects on health, especially to infants and young children, the reports had said. "Though the water available from the borewells of Bangalore have certain levels of nitrate, it causes no harm to the health of people, provided the quantity of nitrate in such water is within the limit of 45 milligrams/litre,'' BWSSB said. The Board appealed to people not to consume any water found to contain nitrate more than the safe limits. To help consumers, the laboratory in High Grounds will test nitrate contents in samples of water. "Drinking water supplied by BWSSB is of high standards and scientifically processed and tested for chemical contents,'' BWSSB said.
