Two kids killed in accident

NEW DELHI: Two children were killed and their mother was seriously injured when the three-wheeler scooter rickshaw they were travelling in was rammed by a speeding car and then a truck at Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi early on Tuesday morning.

The police the incident occurred around 4-30 a.m. when the victims, 12-year-old Laxmi and her 14-year-old brother Yogender, were going with their mother Roshni from Kalkaji Temple to Gufa Wala Mandir at Preet Vihar for `darshan'.

At the Laxmi Nagar Chungi traffic signal their TSR was hit by a Maruti Zen. As a result of the impact the autorickshaw came in front of the truck which was coming from behind. After hitting the autorickshaw the truck also hit the Maruti Zen. As all the vehicles were in motion, they got dragged quite some distance. While Yogender and Laxmi suffered fatal injuries in the accident, their mother was seriously injured. The TSR driver, Atul, was also injured in the accident. The occupants of the Maruti Zen however escaped with minor injuries.

All the injured were taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital from where they were referred to JPN Hospital. The police have booked the truck driver, Nand Kishore, for causing death due to rash and negligent driving.

Alleged cheat arrested

NEW DELHI: An alleged cheat, who had duped a furniture trader of lakhs of rupees by posing as an official of a non-existent medical college, has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police. Two accused had already been arrested in connection with the case by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW). According to the police, the accused, Umed Ali Khan, a resident of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested on Monday. The police said he had cheated a furniture trader, N.H. Dwivedi, by commissioning an order worth rupees several lakhs while posing as vice-president of non-existent Dr. Zakir Hussain Memorial Medical College that was ostensibly located in Meerut. He had even obtained Rs. 9 lakhs from Mr. Dwivedi as commission in lieu of a contract worth Rs. 81 lakhs. The EOW had last year arrested two of his accomplices, Attar Singh and Rajender Singh.

Vivekananda Law School wins

NEW DELHI: The Vivekananda Law School team has won the two-day National Moot Court Competition organised by Jamia Millia Islamia's Faculty of Law. Justice A.K. Sikri of the Delhi High Court gave away prizes to the winners -- Shubail Farook, Hazel Maini and Nitin Khanna. Prominent law colleges from North India participated in the competition that ended on Monday.
