KOLKATA: Defending champion Army XI drubbed Karnataka XI 6-0 in a group B quarterfinal league match of the Indian Oil Beighton Cup hockey tournament here at the Mohun Bagan ground on Wednesday. In another match of the same group fancied Indian Airlines brightened its semifinal prospects notching up its second consecutive win by beating local challenger CCFC 3-0. In the only group A match played in the day, Punjab and Sindh Bank beat Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) 2-1 to move to the top of the group table with full six points. Army XI produced the biggest win of the quarterfinal league stage raining goals on a hapless Karnataka combine. The army team led 4-0 in the first session with Cyprin Aind, Ellysar Lakra, Captain Suresh Kumar and D. Mahadik who scored off a penalty stroke making individual contributions. Kumar struck his second goal after the break before Anil Ekka rounded off the scoring in the 64th minute of the match.
Consistent show
Indian Airlines, having downed Karnataka 3-1 on Tuesday, remained consistent in its performance reproducing same number of goals against CCFC. Sameer Dad (16th minute), Jalwinder Singh (25th) helped the team to a 2-0 margin in the first session before star striker Dhanraj Pillay completed the tally scoring a penalty stroke in the 67th minute. The airlines team tallied six points to consolidate its position on top of the group table. The bankmen took a 2-0 lead with Mandeep Singh first in the 30th minute before Rajwinder Singh brought the insurance goal from a penalty stroke in the 40th minute. Edmund Kerketta reduced the margin striking from the spot in the 48th minute.
