1,500 RAJiv Internet kiosks by July

Staff Reporter

64 Government and private services to be offered in near future

  • Non-delivery within timeframe attributed to power problems
  • Government keen on providing a community-learning platform
  • Kiosks to serve as single-point interface to access a range of services

HYDERABAD: Radiant Infosystems (RI), vested with the job of setting up 5,550 RAJiv Internet Kiosks across 14 districts in the State, has said that by July-end it would have 1,500 of them in place.

At a press conference here on Wednesday, RI Chief Executive Officer Venu Myneni said the company had tied up Intel Corporation to reach out e-Governance solutions. He said the kiosks would serve as a single-point interface to access a range of Government and private services.

He said the difference in approach as far as e-Governance was concerned was that systems became "citizen-centric" rather than Government being in the centre of things. A bouquet of 64 Government and private services would be offered in the near future from RAJiv Internet Kiosks.

    Only power bills

Replying to questions, he said as of now only payment of electricity bills was available in 10 RAJiv Kiosks operationalised on a pilot basis in Chittoor and Kadapa districts. He attributed the non-delivery within the timeframe to power problems and added that the partnership with Intel and the community PC platform would solve those problems.

He said Government was keen on providing a community-learning platform apart from running it as a convergence of e-Governance services through RAJiv Internet Kiosks.

    Technology adoption

Joydeep Bose, Director (Emerging Technologies) Intel Corporation, said that Intel actively supported the efforts to provide computer technology to places where it was previously not available. He said their experience showed that information and communication technology adoption in developing nations needs more than a standard PC. "The technology needs to be adapted to local conditions."
