dated April 7, 1956: Reverse for ruling party

The general elections in Ceylon, judged by the results declared so far, indicate a reverse for the ruling United National Party, led by the Prime Minister, Sir John Kotelawala. Though Mr. Kotelawala himself has been returned, seven members of his Cabinet as well as a number of junior Ministers have been unseated. A total of 248 candidates are in the field for election to the 95 seats in the House of Representatives. They represent 11 political parties. The leftist-supported United Front (Mahajana Eksath Peramuna) has almost swept the polls. As more and more results flowed in, observers were confident that Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, leader of the United Front, was well placed to become the Prime Minister of Ceylon for the next five years or more. 57-year-old Oxford-educated Bandaranaike has been the protagonist of a policy of non-involvement in big-power politics.
