A one-member Commission
K.T. Sangameswaran
CHENNAI: The State Human Rights Commission, which had a full body of five members including the Chairperson when it was constituted in April 1997, is now a body with only one member, the Acting Chairperson. The latest to retire is S. Sambandham. He retired on March 29.
When the body was set up nine years ago, S. Nainar Sundaram headed it. He died in September 2001 while in office. Since then, there has been no regular Chairman for the Commission. Subsequently, other members retired. And, Mr. Sambandham and the Acting Chairperson, S. Thangaraj, were the only two members left in the Commission.
Official sources say that the appointment of new members can be expected only after the State Assembly elections.
