Corrections and clarifications

In "U.S. Congress was not consulted on nuclear deal" (International, April 5, 2006), a reader said the last paragraph of the UNI report was confusing. (It was on a Washington Post report on the India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal that came two days before Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice was to defend it before Congress). The sentence said: "The Post also said the deal also went against two national objectives — the desire to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and the desire to counter the rise of China, in this case by accelerating New Delhi's ascent as a global power." We checked the text in the Washington Post ("India Nuclear Deal May Face Hard Sell", By Glenn Kessler, Washington Post Staff Writer, Monday, April 3, 2006; A01) and the sentence is: "The debate over the deal has pitted against each other two powerful national security goals — the desire to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and the desire to counter the rise of China, in this case by accelerating New Delhi's ascent as a global power." The UNI report has presented this wrongly.
