News Analysis
In "U.S. Congress was not consulted on nuclear deal" (International, April 5, 2006), a reader said the last paragraph of the UNI report was confusing. (It was on a Washington Post report on the India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal that came two days before Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice was to defend it before Congress). The sentence said: "The Post also said the deal also went against two national objectives the desire to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and the desire to counter the rise of China, in this case by accelerating New Delhi's ascent as a global power." We checked the text in the Washington Post ("India Nuclear Deal May Face Hard Sell", By Glenn Kessler, Washington Post Staff Writer, Monday, April 3, 2006; A01) and the sentence is: "The debate over the deal has pitted against each other two powerful national security goals the desire to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and the desire to counter the rise of China, in this case by accelerating New Delhi's ascent as a global power." The UNI report has presented this wrongly. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
