Special check posts to prevent illicit arrack movement planned

Pondicherry: District Collector and Election Officer of Pondicherry G.Theva Needhi Dhas said here on Thursday that special check posts would be set up at Kanagachettikulam, Mullodai, Gorimedu, Madagadipet, Tirukanoor and Madukarai to prevent movement of illicit arrack.

Addressing presspersons here, he said the Deputy Excise Commissioners in the outlying areas of Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam regions would take steps to set up the check posts.

All liquor shops and bar attached restaurants should not run business beyond 10 p.m. and this order would be in force between April 13 and May 12.

Such orders had been enforced from April 5 in Mahe and Yanam regions.

Special vigilance squads comprising revenue officers and tahsildars would also function in each of four zonal divisions and there would be surprise checks in vulnerable areas.

Mr. Dhas said to ensure that there was no evasion of payment of excise duty on the part of the manufacturers and sellers of the liquor products, the Department of Excise had introduced a new system to ensure that the liquor bottles carried special holograms.
