Fun, food, frolic, a worthy cause too

Chances are that you would never see them like this in public. In an effort to raise money for children living in a Gurgaon orphanage, one of the officials at the Visa Department of the British High Commission in New Delhi volunteered to get his French beard painted pink, another pitched in to get his head shaved, while yet another screened a video of him dancing after getting drunk. And with their own families and colleagues paying big money to see them perform the stunts, this "fun-with-a-cause day" at the British High Commission on Thursday ensured that the 30 children invited to spend a day there had more than just a good time.

"The Visa Department here is celebrating what we call `Away Day' and this is primarily a team-building effort. And while traditionally officials comprising both local and UK-based staff take time off and go to visit a spot of tourist interest, this time round instead of going out the staff decided to invite these children over. We also decided to join hands to raise funds for them. The idea was to raise money from `in-house' members by officials volunteering to undertake activities including shaving their head, etc, and others paying to see them do so. This is a team-building event with a noble cause," said a British High Commission official.

The staff of the Visa Department of the British High Commission invited 30 children from the orphanage in Gurgaon to their premises to enjoy themselves. The children busied themselves enjoying the several activities arranged for them including games, magic show, face painting sessions and a cricket match.

"We had a fun day at the High Commission and loads of food and fun activities and received many gifts," said one of the children who participated in the event. — Bindu Shajan Perappadan
