Mysore to soon get water on alternate days

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Thursday assured the Legislative Assembly that the water supply system in Mysore city would be set right to ensure proper and equitable supply to various areas. If it became necessary, he would initiate action against the officials responsible for the lapses in the distribution. He said Mysore would get water on alternate days from this month and the system would continue till the monsoon sets in.

Replying to M.K. Somashekar (JD-S) and Shankaralinge Gowda (BJP) on the problem faced by the citizens of Mysore owing to shortage of drinking caused by faulty distribution, the Chief Minister said he had already discussed the matter with the officials concerned during his recent visit to the Mysore. He would take it up again during his next visit.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said Mysore was getting 32.92 mgd (million gallons a day) of water from the Hongali, Belagola and Melapura water supply schemes. Earlier, it was proposed to supply 42.50 mgd of water from the Hongali and Belagola schemes, but it could not be implemented because the pumping system was old.

Demand increasing

Mysore had a population of ten lakh and new layouts were coming up pushing up the demand. Water was also being supplied through 857 hand-pumps, borewells and 625 borewells fitted with pumps.

He said that the new extensions were being supplied water in 10 tankers, but the Mysore City Corporation could not meet the growing demand during the summer. The second stage of the water supply scheme had been taken up, he said.
