High Court jubilee today

Staff Reporter

President will inaugurate the celebrations

BANGALORE: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam arrived on Thursday night. Mr. Kalam, who has a hectic schedule on Firday, will inaugurate the Karnataka High Court golden jubilee celebrations.

He will then proceed to Siddaganga Math in Tumkur and then go to Madikeri where he will participate in General K.S. Thimayya Centenary fete.

Governor T.N. Chaturvedi, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Supreme Court judges Ashok Bhan, B.P. Singh and R.V. Raveendran, High Court judges and retired judges, advocates and a host of dignitaries are expected to participate in the High Court golden jubilee function.

Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph said the event would not only be an occasion to celebrate but also to critically evaluate the existing judicial system in the State.

Mr. Cyriac Joseph hoped that the celebrations would come up with measures to qualitatively and quantitatively improve the judicial system and motivate the judges, advocates and court staff to perform better.

He said the theme `Justice for all-real and speedy' was chosen as the court wanted to highlight the point that justice should be available to all sections of society and not to only a handful.

It also meant that justice should be real and not merely technical or statistical. Estimated to cost Rs. 75 lakh, the celebrations will continue till November 4, 2006. During the period, a host of social, legal and cultural programmes will be held on the premises.

It is perhaps for the first time that a High Court is holding its golden jubilee celebrations for such a long time. It is also perhaps for the first time that the celebrations will not begin or end with an inauguration.

What has earned the High Court a high degree of appreciation is that it is going to work 12 days extra from June to dispose of pending cases. Another is its decision to ensure that all the judges will make themselves available for lok adalats. As it is, lok adalats are held every day after court hours and judges preside over it on rotation.

The High Court premises has been illuminated and the lights add grandeur to the majestic building. A fresh coat of paint has been given to the building and the lawns have been spruced up.

The celebrations will be held behind the High Court premises. A pandal has been erected and all arrangements for the programme have been completed.
