Union Minister opens blood bank

TIRUPATI: Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi has inaugurated the Sri Venkata Sai Charitable Trust Blood Bank and Transfusion Centre in Tirupati. She said the trust would be doing justice to its existence only when it provided blood to as many poor and needy as possible. Among the other participants were the local MLA, M. Venkatramana, Director of the SVIMS superspecialities hospital, Dr. G. Subramanyam. - Special Correspondent

Mega ritual at Srisailam

KURNOOL: Mahakumbhabh-ishekam will be performed at Srisailam between April 8 and 13, according to Executive Officer S. Shivakumar. The mega ritual is being performed for seeking universal well-being. Sacred water from the Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Bhima, Kshetra, Chandrabhaga, Godavari, Krishna, Cauveri, Tungabhadra, Pennar and Swarnamukhi is procured for the ritual. - Staff Reporter

Health Supervisor in ACB net

HYDERABAD: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Thursday arrested a Health Supervisor working in S.V.R. Ruiya Government General Hospital at Tirupati, C.N.S. Raju, at his residence on charge of receiving Rs. 2,000 bribe from a complainant. He tested positive when subjected to a chemical test and was being produced before the Special Judge for ACB cases in Nellore, according to a press release. - Staff Reporter

Maoists kidnap 9

KHAMMAM: Nine Salva Judum activists were reportedly kidnapped by Maoists from Dondra village in Kunta sub-division of Chattisgarh. The village, 12 km away from Chintoor in Khammam district, was one of the strongholds of Maoists. - Staff Reporter

3 of family end lives

VIZIANAGARAM: A pushcart vendor Shiek Madina (35), along with his wife Ramalakshmi and three-and-a-half year-old son Naveen allegedly committed suicide at his rented residence in Bondaveedhi here, according to the One Town police. One reason for the extreme step could be the heavy debt the couple accumulated after taking money from a daily financier. - Correspondent

Rajahmundry: Andhra Pradesh Road Development Corporation Managing Director Ravindranath and his team have taken up a fresh look into the proposed two-way road along with four-lane bridge which is going to come up between Kovvuru and Rajahmundry. Women vent their ire

KURNOOL: Women, led by the CPI(M), staged a demonstration with empty pots at the panchayat office at Aspari in Kurnool on Thursday and later ransacked furniture. STA reconstituted

HYDERABAD: The Government has reconstituted the State Transport Authority (STA) for two years with Special Chief Secretary/Principal Secretary/Secretary as chairman, Transport Commissioner as member and Joint Transport Commissioner and Secretary, STA, as member-secretary. G. Nagi Reddy of Proddatur in Kadapa district and Taher Bin Hamdan of Sirikonda in Nizamabad have been roped in as non-official members. - Staff Reporter

Uproar over Collector's transfer

ADILABAD: A host of Dalit, BC, ST and minority organisations unitedly gave a call for Adilabad bandh on April 10 to pressure the State Government to stall the transfer of the Collector R. Subba Rao. There has been speculation in the press about the impending transfer.

At a press conference here, Dalit leaders Bharat Waghmare and Ratnazade Pragnya Kumar under the banner of SC, ST, BC, Minority Aikya Vedika said a Praja Pradarshana (public demonstration) would be held in the town on April 14.

Rama Navami celebrations

KARIMNAGAR: Sri Rama Navami, celestial wedding of Lord Rama and Sita, was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety in Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy Devasthanams in the Vemulawada temple town and other Siva temples in the district on Thursday. Pilgrims thronged the temple town to witness the celebrations.

Ph.D awarded

WARANGAL: M Rajitha, assistant executive engineer of Panchayat Raj Department was awarded PhD by the National Institute Technology (NIT) for her thesis titled `Development of performance based design and appraisal of steel fibre placed in critical regions of rigid pavement.'

Rajitha is the first woman engineer of PR Department in the State to earn a doctorate. e.
