VISAKHAPATNAM: The district administration's attempts to hold a gram sabha at Gangavaram near here failed on Thursday with the fisher folk boycotting it even as the construction work of the Gangavaram port was suspended for the day as a mark of respect to Ch. Nookaraju, the fisherman killed in police firing on March 27.

    Decision unchanged

Though the officials announced on Wednesday to hold a grama sabha and resurvey of people affected by the private port project in their village, the Gangavaram Matsyakarula Aikya Vedika (GMAV) stuck to its decision of not attending it.

The fishermen did not allow the officials to conduct a fresh survey on villagers affected by the port being set up by Gangavaram Ports Limited (GPL) - at a cost of Rs. 2,000 crores.

Minister for Commercial Taxes Konathala Ramakrishna, after visiting Gangavaram on Wednesday told the villagers that the Government had asked the port management to suspend construction work for a day as a mark of respect to Nookaraju.

The GPL is a company set up by D.V.S. Raju and Consortium and Dubai Port International. Five berths are scheduled to be commissioned by December 2007, as part of the first phase.
