Commissioner praises South division police

Marginal fall in the number of property offences this year

BANGALORE: Commissioner of Police Ajai Kumar Singh on Thursday said there had been a fall in the number of crimes and road accidents in the city during the first three months of this year compared to the first quarter of 2005.

Mr. Singh told presspersons that 2,294 property offences were reported from January to March this year as against 2,712 cases during the first three months of 2005. While the first quarter of 2005 had accounted for 56 murders and 225 robberies, 46 murders and 170 robberies were reported this year, he said.

While the crime rate has come down in South, West, East and Central divisions, there has been an increase in the crimes reported from the North division.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) will be asked to take measures to check crimes, he said.

Mr. Singh praised the South division police. He said that traditionally crime rate keeps increasing in the South division. On the contrary, the property offences have come down from 794 cases in 2005 to 499 this year.

The South division police have recovered stolen property estimated Rs. 1.18 crore from January to March this year compared to Rs. 63.93 lakh worth property recovered during the first quarter of 2005, he said.

In all, the city police have solved 724 cases of property offences this year and recovered stolen property estimated at Rs. 5.27 crore. They have returned goods estimated at Rs. 3 crore to the owners.

To check the activities of the organised gangs in the city, three persons with criminal antecedents had been detained under the Goonda Act this year.

Accidents

Fatal road accidents have come down from 218 during the previous year to 197 this year. While 231 persons were killed during the first three months of 2005, as many 211 persons lost their lives in road accidents this year.

In all, 1,494 people were injured in 1,710 non-fatal accidents this year, he said.

The number of cases booked against the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus drivers for traffic violations has increased to 4,269 as against 3,523 in 2005.

To a question, the Commissioner said the police had collected Rs. 15 lakh from the BMTC as fine for traffic violations by its drivers. The police and the BMTC officials would conduct joint raids to check traffic violations by BMTC bus drivers, Mr. Singh added.
