KOCHI: Deputy Election Commissioner Rajasree Bhattacharya has recommended that constituencies where prominent persons are in the fray in the Assembly elections be put under special observation. He was speaking at a meeting, convened by the Election Commission on Thursday, of Collectors and police chiefs of the districts going to the polls in the second phase of the elections. Nalini Netto, State Chief Electoral Officer, participated. Mr. Bhattacharya expressed satisfaction over the election arrangements, said a press release from the District Information Office here. The Collectors informed him that a majority of the voters had been issued identity cards. The meeting suggested that Malampuzha, Palakkad, Thrissur and Vadakkekara be put under special observation. The police would be extra vigilant in these constituencies. Ms. Netto said that during the run-up to the elections, no institution getting Government aid should hold interviews, or appoint people. This observation was being made in the light of a complaint received against Malabar Cements, she added. The District Collectors A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, Ernakulam; K.S. Premachandra Kurup, Thrissur; and Ajaya Kumar, Palakkad; the Deputy Inspector-General of Police B. Sandhya; and the Superintendents of Police M. Wahab, M.K. Jayaprasad and T. Chandran were among those who participated. The commission recommended that those being appointed for election duty should not be told either the booths or the constituency where they would be posted. They would be asked only to come to the materials distribution centre, the press release added.
35 file papers
Meanwhile, 35 more candidates, including the former Tourism Minister K.V. Thomas, filed their nomination papers in the district on Thursday. This has taken the total number of papers filed till Thursday to 72. The last day for filing of nominations is Friday and the scrutiny of the papers will take place on Saturday.
