ON DEVELOPMENT PATH: Multi-storeyed buildings and huge complexes set to give a new look to Mahatma Gandhi Road in Vijayawada . PHOTO: CH. VIJAYA BHASKAR
VIJAYAWADA: Enthused by the sanction of funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), city and district administrations got together on Thursday to finalise a few development projects. Officials of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) met on Wednesday and prepared a plan of action for calling tenders under the JNNURM. With the Roads and Buildings Department sanctioning Rs. 20 crores, glitches in the way of building Nainavaram flyover were cleared. The South Central Railway had sanctioned its share of Rs. 17.6 crores. The works would begin soon. The VMC proposed to incorporate the storm water drains on Bandar Road in the JNNURM. By May 15, the works would take a definite shape. A notification will be issued for land acquisition in the first phase of Bandar road widening up to 120 feet in a couple of days. The Union and State Governments released their share of funds meant for the city under JNNURM and deposited the same with the nodal agency -- AP Urban Infrastructure and Development Corporation. The VMC could draw the money on submitting utilisation certificates on completion of every work in a phased manner. The administration also decided to widen the phase-III of Eluru Road towards Gunadala side in the next 15 days.
Road, drain works
The VMC decided to complete the works of roads and drains in all the areas wherever they were required, including extension areas, as part of JNNURM. Ramavarappadu flyover and laying of 100-foot road in place of the erstwhile Satyanarayanapuram railway line would also form part of these works. While the consultants appointed by the VMC would complete the preparation of DPRs (detailed project reports) by this month-end, the corporation authorities were trying to negotiate for a bigger share in the JNNURM meeting slated for May 15. All the water supply schemes under the 10-MGD plant, including laying of pipelines and completing the balance work on water tanks, would come to an end by April 30, according to Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar. All defunct borewells in the city were repaired to meet summer needs. Underground drainage works in Krishnalanka, Currency Nagar, Kamineni Nagar and Nagarjuna Nagar would be completed by May-end. Tenders would be finalised for blacktopping of roads by May 15.
