Staff Reporter

ASI allegedly attacked with iron rod; injured

NEW DELHI: A young man who was arrested for attacking an Assistant Sub-Inspector of Kalkaji police station in South Delhi on Thursday later turned out to be a burglar.

The police have also arrested his two accomplices and two receivers of stolen property. Looted property worth several lakhs of rupees has been recovered at their instance.

According to the police, ASI Rambhool Singh and Constable Jitender were patrolling in Kalkaji when Rambhool noticed a man moving around in suspicious circumstances in the early hours of Thursday.

However, when Rambhool tried to question him, the man attacked him with an iron rod and rained a series of blows on his head, leaving him bleeding profusely.

However, Rambhool and Jitender did not let the man -- later identified as Rahul, a resident of Govindpuri Transit Camp -- escape and arrested him. At his instance, two of his accomplices Nishant Roy and Pratik, also residents of Govindpuri Transit Camp, were also arrested. The police arrested two alleged receivers of stolen property, Murari Jena and Gaurav Kumar, both residents of Sector-20, Rohini.

The police recovered 14 computers, a computer monitor, three computer printers, scanners, a motorcycle, huge amounts of gold and silver jewellery, a mobile phone, eight wrist watches and other electronic items in the raids conducted at their hideouts.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to having been involved in at least half-a-dozen burglaries and one case of robbery. The police said Rahul, Nishant and Pratik worked together as well as worked with other gangs. The gang usually targeted cyber café, mother dairy booths and offices late in the night to steal cash and electronic items.
